ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the effects of mindfulness therapy on blood glucose control and quality of life in older adult patients with diabetes mellitus and cognitive impairment. Methods:A total of 313 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and cognitive impairment aged over 75 years who received treatment in Xinxiang First People's Hospital from August 2018 to July 2020 were included in this study. They were randomly allocated to the intervention group ( n = 157) and control group ( n = 156). All patients underwent treatments for diabetes mellitus and underlying diseases. The intervention group was subject to 8 weeks of mindfulness therapy. The percentage of patients with qualified glycosylated hemoglobin in human whole blood and 36-Item Short Form Health Survey questionnaire score were compared between the two groups. The Pearson correlation was performed. Results:After 8 weeks of treatment, the percentage of patients with qualified glycosylated hemoglobin in human whole blood in the intervention group was 43.95%, which was significantly higher than the level (25.48%) at the recruitment and the level (30.77%) in the control group ( χ2 = 12.17, P = 0.002; χ2 = 5.80, P = 0.016). The quality of life score was significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group [(72.16 ± 14.08) points vs. (64.37 ± 15.49) points, t = 4.65, P = 0.001]. Conclusion:Mindfulness therapy can regulate blood glucose level and improve quality of life in older adult patients with diabetes mellitus and cognitive impairment.

ABSTRACT

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has certain advantages in the treatment of precancerous lesions of gastric cancer (PLGC) based on the holistic concept and the thought of syndrome differentiation. Currently, it is generally divided into 6 kinds of syndromes: liver and stomach qi stagnation syndrome, liver and stomach heat stagnation syndrome, spleen and stomach weakness syndrome (including spleen and stomach qi deficiency syndrome with coldness), spleen and stomach damp heat syndrome, stomach yin deficiency syndrome and blood stasis in stomach collateral syndrome. Clinically, the doctor should treat PLGC patients according to different syndrome types by using Chinese medicine prescription, which could improve the gastric mucosal pathological state, gastroscopy and clinical symptoms, to rehibit the development of precancerous lesions, reduce the incidence rate of gastric cancer. In the future, the doctors shouldreach the consensus of treating PLGC with TCM diagnosis, and focus on the research of TCM compounds or monomers with obvious curative effect, increase the times of follow-up, and evaluate the long-term curative effect.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to understand the meaning of the near miss experience during pregnancy, labor, birth and puerperium in the life of the women who survived. The conceptions of Medical Anthropology were used as the theoretical framework for the analysis and the Oral History as the methodological reference. The research was developed including women who live in a micro-region of the northwest of São Paulo state and Fernandópolis district. Thirteen women who returned from the intensive care unit of a municipal general hospital, from 2003 to 2005, participated in this study. The interviews were presented as narratives. The data showed that the experience of a severe complication with risk of death was remarkable, unpleasant, evidencing feelings of suffer, fear and worry. The women noticed that ?something is wrong?, then they looked for a health service unit and evaluated the assistance given. The main women?s worry was related to the child, the husband and the family. The findings of this study permitted to have a comprehensive vision of the experience of the women who faced the risk of maternal death and survived, as well as the changes in their lives and the ways of coping and overcoming the difficulties found.

ABSTRACT

his study is for evaluating the effects of thesequence in which the different stimulus arepresented, the interviewer, the place of theexperiment and the time of the data-collectingprocedure. In the first instance, it was evalu-ated the effect determined by the order in asequence of stimulus. The results revealed theabsence of any effect determined by thesequence order, since they were the sameindependently of the variations applied to thesequence. The effect determined by the inter-viewer, by its turn, provoked only a singlesubtle result, because, considering the factthat there were four women acting as intervi-ewer, only in the answers obtained by one ofthem it was noted significant statistics differen-ces and, even so, only in one of the six scenesused in the experiment. Concerning the vari-ation of places, from among the five siteswhere the data-collecting procedure was car-ried out, also only one presented a significantresult difference. At last, as regards the hourwhen the data-collecting procedure is carriedout, also only one of the four different hourspresented a relevant statistic difference inresult. Those results indicate, therefore, thatthe effect of the contingential factors does notseem to be decisive in spite of all the cautionsadopted by the researcher
